So I had a coral come in bleached from a live sale a couple weeks ago, probably due to shipping stress. So instead of tossing it I put it in the tank. Now it's turning brown and it's not from algae growing on it. Is this a normal step in a coral recovering?

If it is not algae, yes the coral is recovering.
I once picked up a "dead" white coral off the beach after a hurricane that I wanted to use to mount a frag on. I tossed it into my tank ( it was transported dry) and a week later I noticed that there were clear tentacles coming out of the coral piece and it was getting faintly darker. I had it grow for a long time after, but eventually lost it in a tank move/crash. :(
