Hi i have a nano tank set up that I am hoping to turn into a reef tank. It is 5 gallons fully cycled and has been set up for 2 months. It is my first saltwater tank, what types of coral would you recommend?

Welcome to the kool aid!
I would look at mushrooms to begin with, just stay away from the giant varieties.

What is your filtration system?

And in a 5 gallon would consider an ATO a requirement. Small amount of evaporation and all your parameters are out of whack.

Others to look at would most lps, but placement will need to be more planned, some are not kind to their neighbors. Stay away from those that say Aggressive, 8 inches of space from another coral isnt easy in 5 gallons.

+1 mushrooms....Any softy would be good. Zoas, leathers & gsp is some what popular for beginners (easy but it can take over). Mushrooms can take over too & sting other corals, but they're still pretty popular (always been one of my favorites).

I a 5 gallon, if you are newer to the hobby, I would look at zoas, pompom xenia (you will need to frag/prune it eventually), ricordea, mushrooms, sympodium, Liam's clove polyps, violet cespitularia, and yumas just to name a few.

In such a close fit if you are looking to branch into LPS I would look into duncans, candy canes, or fox coral. Just a word of caution it is very tricky to keep calcium and alk levels right in such a small volume of water! So unless you are set on LPS I might avoid them for a while and get your feet under you. If you had a bigger tank it would be a bit easier to establish and keep those levels consistent. Things change VERY quickly in smaller volume tanks. I loved the challenge of my nanos.
