Hi All,

Man do I love the reefing community. Earlier this year I decided that I was going to grow SPS coral in Santa Cruz (CA) for my PhD research. In a nutshell, I want to see how coral gene expression changes when exposed to stressors that one might find along the coastline. The hope is that each stressor creates a unique gene expression signature. This signature could then be used to determine the types of stressors present on a reef from just a small tissue sample.

Who knows what will happen with this research. All I know is that without all the content created by you guys on the youtube platform. The task would have been way too difficult. I mean, in less than 6 months I learned all I could, made my own stand, created and destroyed some glass sumps, made my own LED grow lights, created my own RaspberryPi tank monitor (pH, O2, Sal, ORP, Temp), 8 plug Smart Outlet, and have a tank that is doing pretty well!

Thanks for letting me join the forum. I'm looking forward to being a part of the community.

Stephan

Awsome

Welcome,Thank you for showing off your system and your research. This can only help our reefing community.
Is this a totally self funded project or are you getting help from local fish stores and outside donations?I ask sense there are a lot of suppliers, vendors and others in this community I'm sure would like to donate to higher education.

Thanks all!

How are the tanks looking?! Anyone else in the Bay Area Area?
Anyone else using a Raspberry Pi to DIY an Apex?

Stephan

VERY cool and welcome to R2R! Can't wait to read your results! It doesn't look like you have any fish in the tank. Are you're doing anything else for biological control of algae and/or providing a supplemental source of nitrogen/phosphorus to the corals?

I'm in Oakland, but Santa Cruz is one of our favorite places on the West Coast so my partner and I try to sneak down there as often as we can to explore the coastline and redwoods. It's certainly a beautiful place to do a PhD. Best of luck!
