Common Names: Leptastrea

Difficulty Level: Leptastrea is a medium difficulty LPS coral with sensitivities mainly to stable alkalinity.

Feeding: Meet based foods will help this one thrive and grow including pellets.

Lighting: Low to medium light is best with care taken when moving into higher light conditions.

Waterflow: Leptastrea will do best under medium to higher current to keep it’s ornate skeletal surface clear of detritus and other debris.

Placement: General areas near the bottom with plenty of room to encrust over rocks is best. Leptastrea isn’t overly aggressive but may still sting neighbors

Great timing! I just got one yesterday that looks exactly like the first photo.

Do they grow okay right on the sand bed?

Mine is on the sand bed and does great but It does have a rock base that it grew over

Good to know! Mine is on a frag plug, of course, so maybe that's enough of a base?

Does anyone have a trade name for that first, orange, one?

It should do well down on the sand, but I would recommend putting it on a rock it can encrust over. I haven't heard a trade name for that specific one, but it is one of the most common ones. It's also the best looking one in my opinion.

The gold and green combo of this leptastrea frag really makes it pop!

I have the same question. I just received a leptastrea as a freebie from AquaSD and it had one of those things on it. Can anybody help identify what it might be?

I just put a burning leptastrea on a rock to encrust. The blues against that orange is gorgeous to me.

You may want to watch Tidal Garden's video on Leptastrea coral. Than does a fantastic job with his species specific videos. They are very informative and In the video he speaks of some hitch hikers that make their permanent home within the coral. It may be what you are seeing. The corals also have very small mouths that will feed on phytoplankton and reef roids. I have a bright green Leptastrea that when I feed Red Sea's Reef Energy AB+ those little mouths open up wide and it loves that stuff. I always get a great feeding response when that gets added.
