starting my first reef aquarium soon and I want to know if coraline algae is necessary for coral. Do I have to wait for it to start spotting in the tank or can I add them after first cycle? Also if I do need to wait can I add some fish first? I will be using atm colony to cycle the tank a little quicker.

Fish first
Coraline will find it’s way in on something
Wait on coral and add slowly
Plan ahead and research the coral
Some corals that look great can quickly take over the tank

I’ve been doing a lot of research on some corals I plan on doing some zoanthids, Xenia and gsp in isolated areas and some mushrooms and bubble coral and maybe a toadstool. I just haven’t found any answers to those questions I asked earlier. I know I have to be patient but it’s really hard!

Haha all of the corals you mentioned except the toadstool can totally take over your tank
I thought I did answer your question
You don’t need to wait to see coraline algae growth
That can take a while

The corals you want and are all softies.
I wait for some coralline algae to start before LPS and SPS, it shows calcification is happening.
But for softies, I add right after ugly stages finished, say 6 months or so.

If I am using atm colony do I have to keep the lights off for a while still? I just watched a video and it said I have to keep the lights off for the first 3-4 months to allow all the bacteria to do its thing before adding corals...it was on brsTV
