I know buying frags is the thing to do to get nice colonies at somewhat affordable prices. I have a 350 gallon display I'm stocking from scratch. I need more rock work for the tank. It's 31" tall and only about the bottom 15" is populated. So, I do need to find a nice rock piece that's taller or stacks on my existing rock work. I'll work through that.

However, one of my burning questions is where does one get like a nice colony show piece and bulk order say $800 worth of coral at once. Is there any advantage to buying a large order at once vs. spending $100 every two or three months throughout the year? I would think they'd want to encourage larger orders to avoid shipping charges multiple times.

I was thinking of doing the WWC membership and get a few corals a month for 3 months or something like that? Just wondering what other people do to build up their corals. Some of these take years to grow into larger colonies. I don't want to be 90 before I see some nice sized corals. :)

Find colonies for sale on Craigslist and here on the market. You’ll get a way better price if you go that route rather than buying from vendors.

I buy from a lot of sources. The only problem with buying a large, centerpiece coral for a lot of money, is the risk of losing it. Check your LFSs if you have any. Here I can buy a huge colony for $300. The same coral of that size would cost 3x that price online. Other reefers are a great resource too. But... the WWC club is fantastic. I haven’t done it but know someone that has. He’s gotten great pieces from them.
