I think you need to define what you mean by "stressed out".
I would suspect that if it can encrust onto the new rock it will and then start growing new branches in new directions.
Just for fun I've hung a small piece of neon green birdsnest coral on a strand of sailcloth thread (very water resistant) and hung it from a light fixture so it's above all the rocks in the tank.
