Looks like I may be picking up some coral this week (xenia, green leather, and many mushrooms) and they are all established on their rock. What is the best way to travel with these guys? Looks like I am 5.5 hrs. in the car this time. YIPPIE! But, hey, when craigslist calls, ya gotta answer!

Depending on the size I usually use a good ziplock bag for each coral and put it in my foam cooler. If it is cold out i normally tape a hand warmer to the cooler top and drop in a cheap thermometer just to check the temp. The last frag swap I went to we used different sizes of tupperware containers. Hopefully this helps. There may be a better way that i am unaware of but it seemed to work ok for me. Good Luck!

Sounds good! Thanks!

I've tried to remove some stuff. Zoas and nems. It can be done but I found it difficult personally. I found that if you can chisel or even saw the chunk of rock off with the coral attached it was much easier. FYI though using the chisel was kind of a crap shoot. I went to chop some zoas off and when I tapped the rock it split the colony right down the middle. It wasn't the goal but it happened.

+1 on the hand warmers. I wrap bags in towels to keep hand warmers off the bag since they can get over 120 degrees then place in a cheap 711 cooler. In summer or if warm outside i dont bother with it. I've bought corals at shops and kept them with me while I've run service calls for 10 hrs with no issues. As long as water doesn't get cold and you keep them out of direct sunlight you should be fine those are hard to kill corals. Make sure you dip them to keep pests and algae out your tank. I didnt once and battled dinos for 2 years because of it...leson learned.

Here is a pic of what I am (weather permitting) acquiring tomorrow. Guy is suggesting buckets for transport. I plan on setting back up this system (35g hex) when I get home and running it to check for pests and what not...
