Just looking for some general opinions on this. My new 300 gallon reef tank is setup with no inhabitants but is cycled. Tomorrow, there is a large coral show in my city. I have my lights and flow all setup. Would it make any sense to purchase any coral at this show? Would be all soft coral. First inhabitants of the tank fish wise will most likely be in next week. If so, what are some suggestions for corals to pick up.

Thanks.

Hi, since your tank is cycled and ready for inhabitants, it is possible to purchase some corals at the coral show.
However, keep in mind to perform some water test in order to confirm that the parameters are ok.
About the types of corals to pick up, it depends on the tank setup. Maybe some soft coral that are easy-to-care . These corals can tolerate a wide range of lighting and water conditions, making them ideal for new tanks.

Thank you! I will keep that in mind then at the show. What about some of the "easier" hard corals, specifically birds nest or bali green slimer. My lights aren't top tier, but not terrible either. Plenty of spots in my reef with 300+ par and strong flow.

Oh, and for my salt mix I use tropic marin pro and my salinity is 1.025

The salinity level of 1.025 is also within the acceptable range for a reef tank, although it's good to monitor it regularly to ensure it remains stable. In general:

- Salinity: 1.024 - 1.026
- Temperature: 75 - 78°F (24 - 26°C)
- pH: 8.0 - 8.4
- Alkalinity (dKH): 8 - 12
- Calcium (ppm): 380 - 450
- Magnesium (ppm): 1200 - 1350

So, enjoy the show and please post some pics ✌

I would stick to soft corals and wait till you get some fish and stability before I would go with sps. But if you must and can get a birds nest for 10 bucks then.....

Got back from the show and placed all the corals in my tank. Let's just say I'm hooked haha, it was so much fun. I got around 7 different pieces, my favorite is the hammer I got. Same with a decent sized birds nest (2-3 inches) for $15. Not expecting much, but it was too good to pass up.

Sounds good ;)
