New to keeping a tank. I've had it going for about 2 months with live rock and 2 clowns a fire goby and a cleaner pack in a 20g.

I have been told that when you start to see purple algae then your tank is ready for corals. I have had a mushroom in it since I got the live rock (it came with the live rock) and it has done very well.

So my question is when can I start adding corals? and what is good to start with?

IMO for a new tank, I would suggest :
toadstool or cladiella sp.
mushroom or discosoma ; rhodactis ; ricordea yuuma/florida
zoanthus
they are pretty good for starter corals :nerd:

post some pics after you add new corals in your tanks will ya?

Have you thought out what you want your take to look like in the end? I started about 3 years ago in this hobby with a 28gal jbj nano, and it's still my current tank. Some of my corals have almost overgrown my tank. I.e. zoanthids. Zoas are fantastic to start with from my p.o.v. For the fact that they are, for the most part, hardy and easy to grow. (some harder to keep zoas excluded) they grow pretty quickly and with this being your first tank, that is something to keep you motivated and ready to have this as part of your lifestyle. But... With having a 20 gal tank, be sure to think ahead. Space will soon be at a premium. Make sure to go slow. I'm sure everyone here would tell you that. Hind sight is 20-20. Allow your live rock to take hold and produce to keep up with your system. Also, the purple algae that you talk about... Is it soft or it it hard and stony?

ok, makes sense. so i was thinking about maybe getting an anemone and having it fist and moving around until it finds where it wants to be?? and i was looking at zoas but idk which is good and also looking for a good price :) but could get a frag of that and expect alot of growth? right?
