I purchased my first pieces of live rock and noticed this maroon object. It has become more colorful the last couple of days. Is this a coral? Brand new to the hobby so thanks for any help.

Does it have a vent hole? Does it react when touched? What does it feel like?

If yes, yes, spongy/rubbery then maybe it's a tunicate.

hi, sponge, tunicate, poss chili coral ?? hard to tell from pics.
have you looked at night ?

I am betting sponge, but could be calcareous algae. It comes down to texture. If it is spongy it's a sponge if it's hard it's probably calcareous algae. Either way it's cool and a great color.

I’d definitely say it’s not a chilli coral as it doesn’t seem to have polyps.
