I will be happly to provide whatever advice I can as a new comer with a 32 gallon biocube. I posted a picture of my tank below. Please ask me any questions that you may have.

The coralline died.
Gotta wait for more to grow back. If its exposed to air long enough it will die. But it's got good surface to grow back onto now.

I have owned and setup 2 Biocube 29g tanks and currently have one active.

All great advice above...
  1. I would start with clean RO/DI water (garbage in = garbage out)
  2. Get a Refractometer and learn how to make stable salt water, choose a salt mix and get good at making clean stable salt water with consistent salinity.
  3. Research ATO (auto top off systems) some are budget friendly some are higher end and automated - then invest and get one functioning. This will keep your clean salt water at a stable salinity. In a biocube it can fluctuate quickly with evaporation (within few days)
  4. Before the big 3 (ALK, Ca, Mag) start to test and understand Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate (if fish are dying this will be impacted in some way)
At this point you can start to understand the filtering process and make some decisions as to what needs to change in your filtering system.

Once you have the ability to make good water and keep it good and do water changes, then we can help you with the filtering system. I would at that point post some details on your test parameters: Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate and some pics and description of what is in the back (filter area of your cube).

Like a previous poster suggested the stock return is garbage, i put a maxijet on it for increase flow and has been kicking for 6 years without a single peep. I also added a mp10 for extra flow to hit any dead spots. I have about a half inch of sand and vacuum what i can when i do water changes which is about 6 gallons every week or 2. I have my own rodi unit that i keep track of when the filters were replaced (i dont trust anyone else sources of water). i have minimal fish because my main goal was to grow coral so i would rather limit the fish food going in just to keep the fish happy but not a single pellet left uneaten. Also for filtration, i have cheato in the back compartment with a flood light shinning in to draw up any nutrients, and make darn sure there is nothing introduced into the air, like air fresheners, or colognes. What goes into the tank will stay into the tank, it gets trapped in rocks and takes a longggg time to get out of the rocks. There will be countless suggestions as to things to do, it is all very valueable information and we will help get your cube to what you want it to be!

Welcome to R2R I have a 29 bio cube as well as several other tanks, patience is key. I also run a sock with carbon in one of the back chambers, than toss it out about once a month or so, it is the cheapest thing I do other than add water.
