Coralife UV Sterilizer

That's great it works for you... I guess I could never tell the difference when I used it. :)

Could have been dwell time as said before. They need very little flow through them for the radiation from the bulb to work.

9 watts on a 30 gallon tank could be pretty big unit. You should never look at overall watts. It's more of contact time to the unit and flow rate. I would think running 60 gph through the unit would be enough to kill anything that goes through it.
I'm not sure about killing everything, I tried it on a 20 gallon quarantine tank to try to kill ich, and I never had any success... maybe I was doing something wrong.

I've learned over the years to "squint" at some claims over the years. Parasite eradication through the use of UV is one. Some people have claimed that it worked for them. I never had any success with treating and eradication using UV. Water clarification, yes.

The problem I found with my Aqua UV w/ wiper Sterilizer is that when O2 remains in the unit, any metal can rust/corrode. The wiper seal nuts, arm, and another component were all rusted on mine. Needless to say it's been a painful process to remove the excess Tin & Aluminum as found by ATI Lab tests. So if yours rusted, expect the next one to rust as well.

I removed mine a couple of months ago and noticed no difference in water quality. It's a debatable topic whether they can sterilize effectively enough to prevent disease.

Its not a debatable topic. It's been proven for decades. Obviously it has to be sized properly just like anything else.

Think only the newer units have the reflector rust issue. Have some older units with zero rust

Then you simply did not have the proper flow and size unit. My Achilles can attest to this in my known ich tank

Proper flow, yes. Undersized, most likely. Had a 100 watt monster years ago on a 75 gallon. Ich out break and did little to stop it. Lost $300+ fish.

Had the UV always been running and how old was the bulb?

It was brand new back then. Had the unit running a couple months before all hell broke loose and all the deaths.

Since I've been a advocate for QT. Didn't do that back then, I have since.

I do think we've strayed off topic and I apologise for that.

Let's get back to the original topic.

My wife almost had a heart attack but this is the uv I run on my reefer 750. Its plumbed inline so taking in close to 700 gph.

These are like many Coralife components, entry level, low end equipment and the turbo UV is an Ok unit . . . But . . . . Are you Ok with - OK ??

A uv is not rocket science. It’s all about exposure time. Cora life uses the same bulb as many other units

Had this happen on one of mine had rust bad I contacted coralife they sent me a brand new unit 2 months later rust again. Never again love my aqua uv. But it's all about contact time if you just killing alage then small unit will be ok bacteria and parasites need a large unit with correct flow or just high dollar eye candy for the tank .

Im stating this as I owned a retail full line pet store for over 11 years and sold 26 and 18 came back with complaints or failures mainly poor seals.
Corallife did stand behind a majority of the units, but years later, I continue to see similar field issues.

Wow. You remember 18 out of 26 over 11 years?

Have 2 turbo twists running for gotta be 15 years. Think I changed one large o-ring seal.

Now I just but odysea Chinese knock offs from topsogseller on eBay. Better design, cheaper, and use the same bulb, as many do

Gotta say think spending a butliad if money for a uv is funny. Even funnier to watch the threads on aqua uv vs. emperor aquatics through the years.

I also experienced rust inside my coralife turbotwist unit about a year ago. They sent me a replacement without a internal reflector and it seems to be working well as it keeps algae growth under control.

Remember no, power of a database- yes. Not saying everyone out there gets a problem unit. Many have as expressed from this post alone. The applies to their skimmer line.

Yup. Won’t hear me trumpeting their build quality. Especially their skimmers. Just don’t see spending upwards of 300 for a uv. Are some better than others? Sure, but at 300+ it’s gotta do my dishes too. Uv is all about exposure time
