coraline algae..To be or not to be.....

I recently purchased 20#s of some live rock, it was still early in the process. There's a large dark green spot in there, not really hairy or anything. Just wondering if bad or good. I believe maybe coraline algae, if so that should eventually turn purple? I am still a novice but give me 10 try years I should know a few things by then...any input is greatly appreciated....

Leave it to be and when you lay it in your tank turn the green area down.
Coraline comes in different colors but mainly the type we see in our tanks are reddish.
Can you tell us a bit more about your system?

IME with dead rock expect to see some green for a while (there's also green coraline). If conditions are right coraline will eventually overgrow everything. You said live rock but that looks like it was dead rock. If you don't see at least little magenta or purple spots starting to grow the tank may need to be seeded with something that has coraline growing on it. Also when starting out if you have coraline in the tank its probably going to show up on the glass before the rock. When I started this tank I had vibrant growth on the glass long before the rock took off. Scraping any off the glass will also help seed the rock.

Here's a few pics. The 2nd pic is the other side of that rock. Some reddish spots. It's a 120 gal, I converted the sump to socks from bio balls. Been running for approx 4 days now. I used rodi water for intial fill and mixed myself. Last I tested the water, all my parameters were in line. Ammonia was at .25ppm. Which I think is normal right now. It's just a waiting game at this point, I just wanted to make sure the green was all good.

IMO thats not live rock..... it might be technically alive as in has some bacteria on it....but its limping along with two broken legs live.

and no the green isnt coralline....reddish spots might be.

As said above i would just turn the rock over and put the green bit facing down. With a new tank you are going to go through a faze starting up with Diatoms and blooms until the tank settles a bit. If you noticed large amount of algae you can turn you lights off as they are not needed in the cycling stage. Maybe adding a piece of shrimp will help to get the process going as it decays as it will add ammonia to the tank to start the process.

You should be good as that is the start of coraline. Now just have to let it cycle. If not using a biological cycling product I would to seed the tank and speed up the process. I would not worry about the green or anything else until after cycling when you can start adding cleanup crew critters.

Nice rock , that was real rock that got taken down and dried out , no biggie in fact i prefer to start y tanks with this kind of rock , it takes a little longer to cure (cycle) but it has Waaaaay less problems in the long run the green is just algae I suppose it was being re-cured

That's a dry rock, will cheaper than live rock. but you don't need to pay more for the water, and pets. Will take more time to cycle
