Hey guys, I'm semi new too the reefing hobby and decided too start small, I have an 10 gallon tank with an Nova extremely 4x24 watt t5 Ho and was wondering why my tank has been setup for a matter of months and hasn't collected coraline algae yet?

Some times it takes a while. What are your levels at? Coraline isnt something that happens over night, it takes a while for it to start. Did you seed your tank with any rock that already had it on it?

+1 need to know your water parameters.

My water is fine, I have been hearing from local reefing buddys that the "stock" t5 bulbs are garbage and I should update the bulbs, do you guys think that would help?

While the bulbs may not be the best I don't think that is the problem.
To me calcium, mag and alk are more important and there must be some
in the tank to begin with for it to start growing.

Yeah I have Kent marine nano part a and b and keep my levels all in check

First of all most coralline does not like high light and will grow more in the shadows. The coralline that likes high light seems to grow really slow and be more rare to get.

start the diy two part or at least using some mrs wages pickling lime (kalk).

also IME corraline really took off in dim blue lighting. As opposed to your higher lights. One time on a 55g with 4 32 watt shop lights I put some blue window tint on the glass cover. That tank was extremely dark and blue but in a week corraline a spread to just about every rock in the tank. But that may have just been that particular tank and conditions.

Depending on how you started the tank is going to matter alot. Was the rock dead or alive, did the rock coralline on it? I started my tank about 6 months ago with rock from 20g that was covered in coralline and my levels stay around CA-440 Alk- 9.5dkh and MAG-1550. And I just started seeing a huge growth or coralline so it does take time. Also, do you have any corals in the tank? If you do depending on what corals you have they might be the reasons since they will be absorbing the Mag,Ca and Alk and possibly delaying the growth of coralline. It'll happen over time.

When I had my first biocube I had the same problem. At first couldn't get the coralline to grow at all. After the first six months of putting in pieces with coralline on it without much results, I decided to change up my lights and it exploded. I started running my antinics longer and cut into the daylights time. Also turned the pumps off and scraped pieces of coralline off the LR and let it spread all over the tank a couple times. In a month I was cleaning the stuff off the glass all the time. Oh yeah and kept the calcium up. Good luck with your tank and hope you get some growth.

Coralline algae isn't photosynthetic, it is calcareous and uses alk mag and cal to grow. Light plays a minimal role.

What is your alk, mag, and calcium? Did you seed it?

I have a wave point set up on a 40 breeder and had a similar problem. I just changed out the bulbs anyway to the API bulbs the are really good. You get good color and corals will pop. My water was fine also which led me to believe that the stock bulbs were garbage. Its been about 5 weeks now and I'm starting to see the coralline grow on the powere head.

Think you should still post the water parameters it might be off by a little and u never no. Hear is mine don't really no if there spot on but everything seems to be growing so I just leave it alone.
PH 8.1
Nitrate 0
Nitrite 0
Cal 470
Mag 1300
Phos 0.05
Ammonia 0
Temp runs at 78.8
Salinity is at 1.025
Think that everything hope this will help u in any way.

My 24 gal nano has been set up since 1-19-13 and unfortunately coraline algae is just now starting to grow on my glass. The bad part is, i have to scrape hard to get it off. Be careful what you whish for, because it will be growing out of control in no time. Good luck.
