My coraline recently started bubbling and flaking off the glass. Leaving clean glass. I noticed that where it is coming off it has some other type of algae growing on top of It. This red short furry looking algae started showing up on my returns and some rocks about a month ago. Now it is coating the coraline and appears to be causing it to relinquish its grip on the glass. Any input??

Weird. Its also bleaching. Is your cal alk and mag ok?
New lights?

It's not bleaching. The light was particularly bright when I took the picture. The color difference is so drastic because the red is very dark red. The center pink spots are your normal pink Coraline. And there is new Coraline growing in various places. It is only wear the red algae grows on top that it is falling off. I have been using BRS two part for the past 2 or 3 months now and my calcium alkalinity and magnesium are all more stable than they have ever been. So I don't think it's that

sorry Its hard to tell whats going on in the back wall pic.
Thats a trip. so its smothering the corraline?

No worries it does look like bleaching in the picture I agree. And yes it appears to be smothering it I guess Whatever it is doing it is causing it to let go of the glass

Is magnesium ok for a coralline live rock in the first stage of cycling a plant without anything else in the tank?

I read this 5 times and I m not sure if it is a question or statement. Can you clarify?. Sry

What I asked is if adding magnesium to a newly cycling tank with corraline live rock helps or not with the coralline to grow
Thanks

@Bob Escher Ohh. Well you don't want to add anything without knowing your current level. If you test and its low I don't think it would hurt. But with fresh salt water and no stock in tank, I'm guessing your level is probably high enough. I would just let the tank cycle. :-) sry I was confused. :-)

I have the same algae. By the time a coraline spot is the size of a dime this maroon algae starts at the center of the spot (the oldest coraline), kills it and the coraline flakes off of the glass. I thought I was the only one?

Just started for me. So guess ill join the club. Lol i really hope theres a way to stop it. I love my coraline. So you agree it is the red algae killing it?

Yes I believe it is. It came in on some rocks that I transferred from a 300 gallon tank that I maintain for the local High School. I increased my alk from 8.0 to a 9.0 and cleaned up the water a little more. 0.01 phosphate on a low range Hanna and 1.5 Nitrate down from 0.08 phosphate and 4.0 Nitrate and it is lessening. I am trying to figure out if it is a parasitic thing or just an opportunistic place to attach.

Thanks Wiz don't worry I just started the cycling last week with a dead fish first and then added the live rock with coralline on it today. I was told to add magnesium and I did I wont add anymore. I will have many more question as I'm moving from fresh to salt. I also presume that this live rock will help the cycling without adding anything else? I'm in no hurry I want to do it right

That is a thought. Parasitism.huh. i was thinking the red algae just found the coraline an easy anchor and blocked the light. Causing the coraline to let go for lack of light.mainly because i have it on my returns and some rock. But i suppose theres coraline those places to. Interresting. Im gonna give it another look tomorrow.

Np. Always like to give my opinion. Helping Is great and sometimes people point out things that I'm misunderstanding and I get to learn. asking leads to knowing. Gotta love that. The live rock and fish* will do awesome untill your amonia, nitite and nitrate levels are dropped. Slow is awsome for the bacteria to grow and keep nutrient levels in check. I'm pretty sure you don't have to worry about calcium and mag until the tank is stable and you start adding animals that will deplete them.

Still looking for an ID on this algae that is killing my Coraline. It is popping up in various places in the tank but only seems to bother the Coraline. I would love anybody to share any information on this algae.

Did you change your light? I just light shocked mine, the corals acclimated fine(yea me the meter guy) but the corraline flaked got funked, I thought it was a bacterial thing at first.
Thinking the algae is just the opportunist.

an need a better pic if you can.

No, the coralline was growing quite well and still is in places. This red turf like algae started growing on my returns first. Then I noticed it growing in patches on the Coraline and on some rock work. The patches of Coraline that have it growing on it Started to flake off. Once the algae afflicted Coraline falls away new Coraline will grow where it was. I believe that the algae is either blocking light causing the Coraline to let go or parasitic to Coraline killing it. I'm not entirely sure. It does grow on
some frag rocks that don't appear to have much Coraline like these.

Looking at the pictures I just posted, I guess there is Coraline where the algae is growing. So it appears to only grow on coralline algae.
