I am not sure if it is because it's more of a light gray in color. Last week when I moved the birdsnest in that location it wasn't there, that's why at first I though it was just coral glue. Then I just noticed the one on the middle today. This is an almost 16YO fowlr that I am trying to convert to reef, first corals were introduced 10/01. the picture of the whole tank was taken 12/01 and that gray stuff are not there yet, and it is actually hard.

It may be an encrusting sponge or bacteria bloom due to the new additions? That's a very mature tank and the new introduction of corals may be causing a temporary upset in the balance within the tank.

thanks for the reply... is it harmful or safe to the inhabitants?

Really hard to say. IMHO, it's probably OK. Most unusual things that happen in a reef tank are mostly harmless. As is always a good idea, keep a close eye on it and watch for changes.

is it also possible that the nerite snails is doing a really good job cleaning the rocks? I added a few last friday to my clean up crew and I see them moving around aflter lights out. I also noticed that there are a few white dots on them.

It’s a marine fungus like sponge that grows in the dark, high flow area above and under some live rock. It can become evasive and best is to manually remove with a toothbrush

I tried to scrape it but it wouldn't come off, I even tried using carbon fiber rod. It's like calcium build up, but I will try to scrape it again.

There are instances whereas alk acts as a precipitant... as with a mis mix of alkaline earths and too much alkalinity forming very similar product

it wouldn't come off with a brush. Parameters measured last sunday, Alk 8.2/Calcium 413/Mag 1410.

I just stopped in my office to get a look on a normal screen. Your description helps.
Its hard and looks like frosting on a pop tart by chance? If so, I believe it's some type of calcification, like the stuff hard corals are made of.

Yup, that's exactly what it looks like. Or when you pour a hershey shell on an ice cream and it hardens. Thanks for the reply, is this safe for the reef?
