Im currently setting up a starfire built tank for the first time, and I've read that if coralline algae is left on the glass for a period of time it can etch your glass. Is there any truth to the statement as i have not seen any pictures of the said etching. Also is there anything that can be done to encourage groth of the algae on the live rock but have it stay off the glass besides constant cleaning?

Ive never heard of it etching glass or acrylic. And there is no way to make it only grow on rocks other then scraping the glass to keep it clean.

I had a large area of coralline near a powerhead on the side of a tank I used to have. Due to where it was, I let it go for years before trying to scrape it off. When I finally did, there was a haze left behind. It was standard glass.

interesting topic, ralph did you every empty that tank and clean it with vinegar? i have purchased used tanks and cleaned with vinegar and they come sparkly clean. never on low iron- star fire glass though
