Coralline Algae gone after Metazorb and Poly Fillter

My 100 gallon reef had some odd coral behavior, so I sent off some water to Triton.
What I mean by odd behaviour is that one or two corals did well, but most just kind of survived and failed to thrive.

Triton said my nickel and vanadium levels were way too high:
V 27.00 µg/l should be 1.20 µg/l 25.80
Ni 37.00 µg/l should be 5.00 µg/l 32.00
Li 612.00 µg/l should be 200.00 µg/l 412.00 - Lithium is not a big deal i guess?

So I start looking for any metal objects (can't find anything substantial).
I changed all RODI filters and resin.
I did three 10% water changes over a week and a half.
I added a poly filter and Metazorb pouch.

Now the corals don't look any happier......and all the coralline algae that had been growing on the back of the tank is now gone! There was a good deal of it back there....now nothing. :-(

Did the poly filter and Metazorb take some key element that caused a rapid algae crash?


I will send off an ATI sample in a week or so to see what this flurry of activity has accomplished and to check my RO for metals.

BTW- The tank itself is only one year old, but most of the rock and sand came from a tank that had been going for over 10 years.

FWIW I run Poly Filters continuously, and have a bunch of coralline algae. I ran Metasorb once in the past, but can't recall if it affected the coralline or not.

Righ now I have running cuprisorb and I have coraline and last week I had in mybtank also the metaSorb with any problem, corals are find si far, maybe was other change in your tank
I have also high vanadium, nikel,aluminum and just a little copper.
My plan is after this week I will send a water test to ATI to see if my leves drop

I don’t know if the coralline issue is related to the metal binding, but you can drive desirable metals down along with those that are excessively high.

Okay. Seems like the Poly Filter and Matasorb may not be to blame for the rapid disappearance of coralline.
I'll just continue address the metal problems with water changes and then re-test.

The amount of vanadium and nickel should be diluted by the heavy water changes, and if I keep track of them, I can guess-tamate if metal is still accumulating.

Hopefully coralline will return someday!

Macroalgae certainly does, and all photosynthetic organisms use it.
