May be a weird request but I'm looking for some coralline shavings to seed my tank. My last tank I used live rock and it ended up with GHA, digitate hydroids, and aiptasia so I went all dry rock this go around. Looking for anything thats purple, pink, or red. Please have a pest free tank(I know, beggars can't be choosers) but id rather not seed with hair algae as well as corralline. LMK what you've got and I can send a couple bucks if needed for shipping.

don't need to seed it? Where would it come from if i didn't seed it? Ive always read that you need the spores to start it up in a tank. Ive got a nuvo 20 so I think my weekly water changes should keep cal, alk, and mag all in good order for coralline and corals.

I also started my tank with 100% dry rock two years ago, which is the only way to go IMO. No seeding. Now I have all the rock, and most of the back glass covered in coralline. It'll come...just be patient. It took maybe 6-8 months.

Where do you believe the coralline came from? It just seems counterintuitive to me that you don't have to seed it. Not trying to doubt you, just some genuine curiosity about your opinion. Thanks

I really don't know. Probably from a coral frag. I felt the same way you did...I wanted it. All I can tell you is that it did come. Good call on the dry rock!

Thanks for the help! I think dry rock is definitely the way to go. Helps teach you patience as well.

Hunk of clean Aqua Cultured Coralline covered rock ( center lower right) seeding my Bulk Reef Saver Dry Rock. Coralline has to be introduced into the tank. It could be from a piece of rock, coral frag, turbo snail / hermit crab shell with coralline on it , ect. I've been taking scrapings off the Aqua Cultured rock and slowly casting it over the dry rock.

Only problem is that most of the coralline on the Aqua Cultured rock will bleach out and die from intense light exposure. Most Coralline Encrusted Aqua Cultured rock is made under low light conditions. It's the scrapings that find the darker places in the tank that will make it and adapt to the LED Lighting. I have my Kessil's set at a low intensity and 5 % color while the tank is cycling to give the coralline a chance to take. That's why the picture above is so blue. I've also read that coralline grows better in blue/violet light. Any truth to this? IDK.

I've picked up a few hermit crabs from a LFS that had more coralline than any of my rock when it was new.

Too many ideologies to even comment on the creation of species so I'll stay on topic. The coralline has to come from somewhere as it can't just spontaneously arise so thats why I was looking for some shavings to seed my new tank. For those that didn't "seed" but it still showed up, we have to remember that these spores of the coralline are microscopic so they could have been introduced by any number of things we put in our tanks.

So does anyone want to send me some glass scrapings? I'll pay for shipping. I'm thinking maybe ship in a small ziploc with a moist paper towel in an envelope. If they act like most other spores then they should be able to survive even a trip of 4-5 days in the mail.

I buy snails with the shells covered in coralline algae and just let them seed the tank.
