Hello
My wife and she's a biologist claim that if Carolina algae cover a rock it will prevent coral from extending or attach to this rock is that true like the rock from my tank single mushroom which prefer to reproduce on adjacent rock rather than its rock tell me you opinion

I have a blue shurunkin zoa frag that the coralline algae has grown up to and now is growing vertically next to the zoa. Ive had to prune it back. So it can happen but more often than not, its not the case.

Most corals produce a protein or enzyme at it's growing rim that dissolves coralline and algae around it so it can encrust. I have several SPS and LPS that have white rings around the area they're encrusting. No scientific synopsis that I know of just my experience.

I was sure that corals have away or another to overcome that

Some corals like encrusting montipora kill the coraline algae before they encrust over it. My actively encrusting rainbow monti creates a white border of bleached coraline algae around it.

I noticed this in my tank and was going to post. I see my Montipora Spongodes total wipe out the coraline algae around it before encrusting while other coral creates a only a small border of bleaching before encrusting over the coraline.

my acros create a mucus like slime around their base that kills the coraline algae in about a 1/4" swath. Next time I see it happening I will try and remember to get a picture for this thread.
