Since Friday morning my corals have been acting really weird.. The zoos and hammers are all closed up. During the day the brains look great but everything else is closed. During the night , morning the brains are expelling white stringy stuff, especially my big maze brain. My wellsos are all huge and puffy as well. They do this from time to time but not every night. I've never seen this before. I added a few carbon bags and did a 20% water change Sunday. Tested everything I could.

Ammonia -0

nitrate-0

nitrate-0

calcium-500

alk-11

ph -8.0-8.2

salinity-1.26

i did another 20 % water change this morning and added a few more bags of carbon. Not sure what is going on here, any ideas? Nothing has changed as far as lighting, flow, temp. At this point I guess I'll just have to ride it out... I'll post pics I. A bit.

Pictures? I'm wondering if your Alk spiked up to that 11 number? Is it always that high?

No, I started dosing Kalk a couple weeks ago and I obviously was dosing too much. I quit dosing a week ago hoping the number will drop on its own.

Alk swings will certainly tick off your corals. Get it stable for a while and watch the corals. They should start opening up again once things are stable again.

Agree on the alk as well. Must say though. Wow, look at all those hammer heads. Bet that's gorgeous when they're all happy

Go to your LFS and get your water tested. I had similar coral issues and it was because my nitrate test kit was giving me drastically false readings. I've similarly had bad PH test kits. So nowadays, anytime my corals look off, I get my water tested elsewhere.
