Corals can be saved

Here it is while I was feeding it. Like I said the other day, it is finally starting to extend its polyps but it looks like it was dying. The bottom is turning a black/dark green color. Any suggestions?

I have reef breeders led lights. I think I’ll end up getting a PAR meter so I can adjust accordingly. I feed them with a baster a mix of brine, mysis, reef roids, and zooplankton as I do with my fat head dendros and other corals. My dendros are doing amazing. Went from one when I first got them to have more than 15 heads in about 8-9 months. I just can’t seem to make my sun coral extend.

My LFS has a par meter that they rent out for something like $10 a day. If you have a good LFS nearby, it might be worth asking if they do something similar. May save you a ton over going out and buying an expensive piece of equipment you probably won't use all that often.

I actually borrowed a par meter from the local reef club. It is sitting at about 100 par.

Very cool. Most of my most valued and distinguished pieces were either free or dying 5 dollar imports. Touch and go for a while, some fragged multiple times to survive, but to this day I have more than a few that come from that category and are pushing 15 years old. 3 have also had a full blown spawn on me. Bad choice of words I guess... but true none the less..

Do you have any idea why in getting discoloration? It started doing that about a month ago. I’m worried why is it darkening in some places even though it seems to be feeding and fairly happy.

My sun coral is finally starting to extend its polyps more. I put a power head facing it so I’m guessing it wasn’t getting enough flow. I’ll try to get a picture in the next few days

Many are collected from oil rigs in the gulf and get hammered by the ocean. I feed a little brine shrimp before lights out to get them active then an hour later they are fully extended and hungry!
