My fiance cleaned our oven on sunday and our corals have closed up. The tank is in the living room which is open to the kitchen. I did a water change Sunday evening but it didn't seem to help. Why are the corals closed and is there anything I can do?

If oven cleaner did get into the water obviously that would be a very bad thing. I would get a big bag of carbon and place it in the sump and make sure your skimmer is working at full capacity.

Our clownfish seems to be doing fine but the corals haven't opened. Can oven cleaner get into the water through the air?

absolutely I have heard stories from people that have those air freshener that shoot out a mist and finding out that the chemicals in them ended up in the tank. Of course your issue is all speculation based on the information that has been provided. If everything was going good before the oven cleaner and the water change then possibly the oven cleaner mist may have found it's way to the tank, but then again I would think if any oven cleaner got into the tank it would be wiped out pretty quick depending on the size of the tank.

It is only a 20 gallon long tank so I would have assumed the same as you. I am mixing new saltwater today to do another water change tonight. Hopefully that will help.

Oven cleaner can be smelled throughout any home do the the fumes created from active ingredients and atmospheric could have reached your tank.

try this:

30-40% water change and add a good amount of carbon in the path of water flow. See how the corals respond thereafter. Additionally, assure lights are not bright in whites and salinity Is accurate.
