I have a 120 gal. fowlr and was thinking about going with some easy to care for corals. the problem is I have two dwarf angels, a midnight and a flame. they are about 2" and have been in the tank for two weeks. I have read that they usually don't bother mushrooms or leathers. anyone know if this is true.

first, no corals are safe with angels, but there are some that do better than others...leathers are noxious enough that they should pick on them.

with that said, I've never had any trouble with a flame angel in any of my tanks. I have been able to keep mostly LPS, that is, frogspawns, torches, hammers, etc.. BUT I do feed my fish 3-4X a day.

thanks. I feed my fish twice a day but one more wouldn't be a problem. just want to add something to spruce up the rock. a few leathers, mushrooms and maybe some xenia. depends on the lighting requirements. I have two 120w Chinese led's. only run them about half way. the thing is I am sumpless and don't want to have to dose.

3dees,

I haven't dose anything in my tank for almost a year..but again, I only have a few LPS corals (huge torch, frogspawn, elegance, RBTA farm, and 3 leathers).

yeah, I just planned on a fowlr because I didn't want to get into all the dosing and everything that goes with it. now, I'm thinking I was making too much of it, especially since I would only want some of the easier corals. do you think my lighting would be enough for an anemone? I would like to get a bta for my black clowns. I realize it would be best to let my tank mature a bit more. it's now going on 5 months with 140 lbs. of live rock.

Your lights should be sufficient. One of my friend runs the Chinese LEDs over his tank and supports rittier, and sps. And as long as your levels are stable your tank should be ready for the bubble tip.

ok, thanks. I'll be looking as soon as this weather settles down. I'll be back asking more questions.

3dees,

The more time you take between adding other creatures to your tank the better. I waited a year before I added any coral frags. One thing a good friend of mine told me long ago, it was "Nothing happens fast in a saltwater build". I hope this helps. Here is a picture of my sumpless 55g reef build:

well, it's been a while since my original post. I started adding corals about a month ago. some leathers, one zoa rock, gsp, and a couple of mushrooms. so far they are doing great. waiting for the weather to break before ordering more.

id stay away from expensive zoas, i have a mac angel and a flame angel in my 125 neither angel picks at my montiporas or chalices, they do pick at certain color zoas ive noticed, but the greens they leave alone. i also have a few sps in there that the angels wont touch. Like people say, its a hit or a miss. But i would def. start out with cheaper corals.

I'm retired so I won't be getting any of the high priced zoas. can't see paying some of the prices they command. I have a coral beauty and so far he hasn't bothered anything. I wondering If I can keep a frogspawn. my calc Is a bit low, about 380. I know softies don't care.
