So I went and got a Divorce back in September. Great times, I tell you what.

In October my corals started being 'meh'. I can't keep birdsnests alive. Some other things were doing stn and rtn and other strange things happening. The only thing 'off' was a steady high alk. I dropped it down to 8 dkh. Still, things are acting strange.

In December/January I had huge colonies that were growing great and trucking along suddenly died. I just could NOT figure out what was going on. Advice given was 'eh, sometimes xyz corals just do that'.

Yesterday was my yearly clean the skimmer good with vinegar day.

I found a nasty, gross, green, rotting cigarette butt in the intake of my skimmer. He was both a smoker and knew enough about the tank to try to do something like this.

So wow. Yup, think I know why corals were doing good then suddenly dying. Crazy what he did to me. Jerk face.

Hopefully soon you'll be seeing great updates from me. I have a tank full of fish! I have some amazing coral colonies that I bet will do so so so much better now!

After the first couple paragraphs I was thinking "somebody" did something. That sucks on the immaturity on his part. Glad the fish are all doing okay and still some amazing colonies.

Yep! ******. You didn't need a jack... like that in your life, and your fish and corals will thank you.
Good Luck, things are looking up already!

Had a similar experience with the x-wife. People who hurt animals are cruel and evil.

Sorry to hear of both the Bid D and most importantly your loss of corals. Glad to see that you found out what was causing such strife.

Yes, it's a shame, but ditto, I too had a evil spouse, but believe it, " you may wait awhile, but what goes around, comes around, and hurts that bad person, more than ever!" Ask my X

I have heard much much much worse stories about ex wives/husbands. I'm glad that you figured out what was causing your issues and hope things recover for you.

I was reading up on the use of activated carbon last night. I can't put my finger on whether AC should be used 24/7 in a reef tank.
Now I stumble upon this thread and I have to ask. Would activated carbon prevented the cigarette butt from contaminating the tank ? Seems to me it would have removed what ever was leaching out of the tobacco.

Well, it may have. But with all the carcinogens in the butt... Who knows. I'm running carbon now and hoping for the best. Well, water changes too.

Nicotine is a pretty potent toxin among the thousand other horrible things in cigarettes. It's great you found it! Some people are toxic!
