I saw in one of my Facebook groups someone selling multiple Maxima clams with zoanthids and I think one had acans on it. It looked pretty landscaped . My question is does this create any health risk for the clam? I feel like if it was kosher to do this people would do it more often.

You used to see this more often when people routinely kept clams that grew and thrived and stated to fill up spaces. Alas, it is too easy to kill clams now with inferior lighting, impatient keepers who buy them too soon and a current lack of good quality larger clams on the market. Currently, it is a struggle to just keep them alive in general.

There is no issue with doing this. You might have to trim them back as they approach the mantle, but usually the shadowing will do this on it's own.

What do you mean by inferior lighting? As apposed to when metal halide was more popular?

Partially. It is a combination of things, IMO. There is no doubt that having MH makes clam keeping easier. Also, clams seem to do better with more daylight and less blue - this is not a huge issue with bluer MH and T5 (20-22k range) bulbs since they still have lots of daylight in them along with their blue peaks, but some LEDs that are more on the blue side mostly forsake the daylight spectrum. Lastly, lots of new-to-the-hobby people are now using low powered LED strips with .25 watt diodes to start out with - these same people two decades ago had metal halides or 4 bulbs VHO setup which could easily grow clams.

Good to know I didn't realize clams we're so light picky thanks for filling me in
