Reefs are in poor shape down there and almost all coral collection is banned. All the good stuff is found elsewhere, anyway. The keys only have 2 species of Acropora.

Illegal to harvest stony corals. Most of it isn't all that great anyways compared to reefs elsewhere. Ricordia and some zoas are from the carribean though.

Allot of ricordea, some zoos come from the keys. Along with most of the rock flower anemonies you see. The regulations allow you to collect allot of ornamentals from Florida with a fishing liscence.

Because all the reefs have been destroyed by us, and coral restoration groups are trying to rebuild them.

Not that we've done great things for them but the reefs in the keys were never indo or the great barrier reef. Different coral species and different environmental factors. They are small patches of corals largely made up of LPS like brain coral species and gorgonians.

I don't know if you've ever been to the keys but the water movement alone is nothing like what you see on pacific reefs.

True, but there used to be huge stands of elkhorn and staghorn Acropora everywhere. All that reef rock wasn't created by gorgonians. Now obviously most of it's been killed by changing climate and other things.

We unfortunately arrived to late to see them in full glory. I do hope what is left does survive and certainly plenty of people are trying.
