Corals refuse to open after treating tank for dinos

Chris how many gallons is this tank was curious

we are tracking outcomes from various forms of reefing in a new rip clean thread and was curious how big your tank is/whether or not its impractical to save your corals all this weekly stress and simply clean the tank into compliance, today

that's not practical for 200 gallons, but for 50 and below it sure is a viable option

25 gal AIO, looks like the dinos are back so I might have to take everything out and clean

so glad its accessible in size, that's a lucky stroke. if you do result to the rip clean just know i've done it about ten times to my tank in order to cheat it into about 17 straight years of running. it would have failed in 09 without an intervention, and then again in 14 and 19 lol. dont feel bad if it comes to wrestling it into place, just suplex the crap out of it. that first link has every critical step in order and there's 500 more examples just like that one, they're all the same steps he's just choosing to not put sand back for a while.

that's why rinsing in tap water isn't harmful: we dont even have to put sand back into a reef tank so what does it matter how we de cloud it :)

and in that rinse, your dinos and their hiding spots and the fuel are jetted out.

rinse off rocks in clean saltwater, assemble a perfectly clean tank is the goal and put fish and corals back into the clean condition matching temp and salinity of the old tank but with clean cloudless substrate and rocks. no bottle bac is needed for the job, your original rock bacteria will remain past all cleaning.

if you get growback more than normal, then we can peroxide zap or you can try parameter alterations to starve out a tiny bit of mass vs a large amount of mass, we dont want all that dying in the tank even if we could find a way.

How would you do this type of cleaning?

You

Few steps you can take:

1- Use a powerhead to blast off the dinos off the rocks (I'm assuming you have a filter sock to catch debris). If not, Siphon as much as you can off the rocks.
2- Raise your nutrient level.
3- Add a Chaeto culture to your sump/refuge.
4- Blackout the display system for a couple of days while you do the above.
5- Add carbon media.

Raise your nutrient level by adding Chaeto, Pods and Phyto
So my tank is a 25 gal AIO, I tried raising nutrients but it just made my algae explode in the tank. I do not run a filter sock but I run filter floss, I have a carbon reactor running also and I have blacked out my display for 5 days while dosing bacteria and peroxide and they still came back.
Should I try bumping up nutrients again? Or try a DIY chaeto fuge? I’ll try anything at this point. I do also have a UV running also….

The tank in post #7 has all steps and then follow up

Hey if you’d like to make a custom run here using those documented runs prior as a base we sure can, post a full tank shot standing back
certain details stand out for each job in initial pics

dont concern if it looks invaded, my own reef was invaded too in a rip clean video I made for the tube. I let it wreck over with cyano on purpose, forced it clean as demo, shocking clean next day.

Those are approximates

for example, in nitrate kit comparison threads api vs others, results range fifty ppm, so your nitrate may be fifty. Same for po4

how your water tests in the invaded condition, full of mass, isn’t important at all. We’d undo that by 8 pm tonite, removing all the mass vs rotting it in tank that’s ideal for sure. It makes your aquarium comply quickly vs stressing frags

once your tank is clean you‘d simply feed the corals well, we can determine fish loading and other commands from tank pic, and export the waste made in the increased feeding. This will align your po4 and nitrate without any testing at all. It’s also not very easy to fix invasions by dosing in nutrients…it’s why no other cure threads for your issue are linked.

Po4 is salifert but nitrates is API, I definitely do not have time for a tear down tomorrow but this weekend I could definitely do it, seems like this would be the best solution

Think I already told you how to solve the issue, a tear down is a bad decision why would you start over you’ll just end up in the same place a few months down the road. run a pleated 25 micron filter, manually siphon and get your nitrates up. Stay away from drastic measures like hydrogen peroxide and black outs as they destabilize your tank.

How big is that pleated filter because my tank is 25 gal aio and by manually siphon you mean manually siphon up dinos?

Yes, at the same time run the magnum with the pleated filter cart. Your trying to remove the dinos from the water column. I would do this twice a week till you get it under control. I can produce dinos on demand by letting my nitrate fall to zero. Good luck!

also leave the sand bed Undisturbed.

Filter

Is this the type of filter you are talking about? Would putting this in the back chamber along with running the UV and raising nitrates get the job done?

Idk if this counts for anything but I have some corralline growing on my powerhead, I might try dosing a little bit of nitrates and phosphates again and see what happens, my skimmer has been off for a week so they all might spike very quickly.
Um again I will be the person to say you need to check nitrates and phosphates with a good reliable checker not api

Magnum Polishing Internal Canister Filter there is a link on post 19. Only need to run it a few hours after stirring up or clean then remove and rinse.

Sounds good, lets see how this works, hopefully I can get the dinos under control
