Corner tanks - yeah or nay?

I had a half circle 90 gallon that was the same type of pain no room and I'm 6 5" and still couldnt reach the bottom

I've had several reef tanks over the years and still currently have a 92 gallon corner up and running (about 10 years now). And for most of those years, I've hate it. The stand doesn't allow for much equipment and it's very hard to work under there, too hard to light it properly, too hard to get the flow right, and seems much harder to keep clean than my other tanks.

I miss my seahorses and have been looking for yet another tank so I can get back into them, but I really don't want another tank. So I've thought about gutting the corner tank, starting fresh, recycling it, and putting horses only in it. Or I'm thinking if I gut it and clean it, maybe I should sell it and get a rectangular tank for that corner of the house.

Does anyone love their corner tank and find it easy to maintain and keep clean? I was thinking it might be easier with seahorses but then again they create a mess with their frequent feedings, and they can't tolerate a high flow so that might even be a worse situation for a corner tank.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I have a 92g corner tank but i use it for fresh water.. id love to make it into a salt water tank. That 36 inches of depth front to back i could do some nice aquascaping in it.

1 it isnt hard to light.. You get 1 long LED fixture and 1 short on.. problem solved. But i know Reef LEDs arent really long so you just het three fixture. 2 for side by side. And 1 for the back.

But tbh i hate leds.. and id use t5s a 8 bulb 36 inch fixture would light that sucker easily mounted with rope or cable on the ceiling.

As for room under the tank. Seeing that the stands are the same size of the tank.. 4 feet long at the longest point and 36 inches front to back.. what kind of issues are you having as far as space ?

I wouldnt even bother with a sump my 150g reef has no sump no skimmer.. and i have 55+ different corals and over 70% if them are sps mostly acropora.. my 92g isnt drilled so id do the same to it as my 150.. just get two emperor 400 hobs for mechanical filtration and dose manually.

I kinds feel like some of you guys make things overly complicated for no reason. Sumps are not needed.

Also the guy above me your 90g half circle is smaller then a 92g corner tank. Its just really tall thats it. You have no width no front to back space.. but you have what 36+ inchs of height ? That tanm is the real pain the rear.. not a 92g corner lol

This is why i refuse to buy a 90g hexagon. I love hexagons but a 90g hex is like 34+ inches tall.. Pretty stupid if you ask me.

Also why is it hard to get flow right in the tank ? I have a 55g hexagon its basically a full cylinder with 6 points . Thats all and i hsve no issues with flow for sps. Its a tad more difficult but easy if you just stop and think.

They do sell power head fixtures with 4+ heads on them so you can aim them in multiple directions. Use the walls to bounce flow off.. point power heads at eachother to create irregular flow..

Not hard

Do you have any pictures of your set up?

I just stumbled on this thread, but yea. I have a corner reef and I like it. Small one too! (54 Gal).

I agree a 100% about the issues with flow and scaping. Still a nightmare. But isn't this actually part of the hobby to find new ideas? lol

For the sump area. We do have to get super creative (see my pics in thread).

By the way, I added a doser now under the same cabinet. And I still have room to spare! lol

I'll try to get a picture in.

Love mine.... took a while to get flow figured out like most others, but the depth and space saved in a room is unbeatable! Every seat in the living room has a great view of these tanks too! I struggled with lighting areas like I wanted particularly with MH, until I took a little different approach and put lower light corals around the out edge and higher demand towards the middle. LED have simplified things immensely. I ran 2- Hydra26HD for a couple years and have since switched to 3-XR15 with diffusers. A 30” sump will fit if you grease it up. I have a Ruby 30 wedged underneath with room for DDR and skimmate locker too! Flow for the DT is supplied by 2 MP40 which keep plenty of flow for LPS, Softies, Montipora.
However not much room for a command center so it’s mounted outside.....for now! The sump area is in the planning stage for an overhaul.

I'm debating going from my RSM250 to a AquaVim 120g corner. The glass is said to be 1" thick so I thought my MP40s would not work but i wonder if the back is thinner and I can mount them like yours.

I would think all vertical panels would be the same thickness.
