Corrosion: build up ?

Hello there, I was in the middle of swapping out my two heaters. And I noticed all of this decay and buildup. I am scratching my head. Wondering what it all could be. Any ideas?. The old heaters were finnex and the new heaters are the same

No it’s titanium and fully intact, the rubber protection is all crapped up and the pile of junk was all on the bottom of sump

mineral deposits. The potentially more concerning issue is the metallic elements that are often found in steel and which can be released in substantial quantities by a rusting device underwater.
