I have some various forms of algae building up. I'm not sure why it got out of hand. Some hair, some slime, no cyano.

Thinking of cutting back the hours that my white lights are on.

Thoughts?

In my experience, reducing the light intensity or illumination period has never been very successful for me at eliminating any algae issue (it just slows it down a bit)

the exception was Cyno in which 3 or 4 days with lights out and tank covered by a thick blanket so no light penetrated did remove all the Cyno and my tank of softies and fish seemed no worse for the experience - followed that by increasing flow / adding power heads or re positioning existing ones I had to improve flow in tank (Cyno appreciates calm water as do other algae species )

removing the nutrients that are fueling these algae is my preferred 1st course of action along with physical removal of as much as I could at water change times ( make the removed water in the bucket as green/ dirty as possible being my aim at said water changes)
Chemical means as a follow up option should the nutrient reducing fail to achieve what I wanted

Reduce the white and purple light, and also I’d suggest to set up your light in a pyramid form...

I'm cutting them from 10 hours down to 4. That should help.

I'm working on nutrient reduction as well.
