OK I want to get this the Stuff out of my tank,... my stand cant fit a decent sized tank under it....unless I do some kinda custom build "frag tank" kinda size. I've got 12 inches of clearance..and not thrilled with adding like a 10 gals stock tank...But I do have room to the side.

Working with What I have, bare minimum new items purchased(which I'm not hardline Limited to but you know trying to be thrify here)... this is what I am thinking.....

Overflow box set up(have to purchase)....goes down to a 29 gal tall(have already side of road find)....High chamber for skimmer(have HOB atm) and heater to work in....water level lowers flows in a U shape though a macro algae refugium....exits though my canister filters inlet...to be sent though that before returning to the main tank by the canister return.

Q's. Overflow Canister filters flow is 525gph...so I need to find an over flow that will match that?

Glass for the barricades/flow...I've got tons of glass, i can cut it I can shape it ....but it's all colored For stained glass. Its 1/8 inch thick....and some of the metals used to make the colors arnt good in a reef tank. I don think they would leach to much...but thought I'd ask.... Thinkin if I stick with something like the basic blue...mineral used in it would be cobalt it be ok?

My scribblies from the other day...(changes to this....not buying a return pump and making the 1st chamber larger to upgrade to IN sump skimmer some day)

I'd be careful with the colored glass. I don't know if it would leech into the water but I'd do some research first. As far as a sump on the side, I think that would work fine. What kind of display tank do you have? As far as the design of the sump, what are your reasons for the u-shaped refugium? With a sump, you can get rid of the canister filter and put all the filter media in the sump. It would make things simpler. Good luck!

U shape was so It wasnt to side and length wise. Plus keeping the pipes shorter.

Display is a 65 gal.

and ok skip using stained glass....I can get the stuff from lowes.

In parctice the over flow will only take in as much as you pump to the tank. The only time you might have a problem is if you use an overflow that is to small for the tank. Most of the commercial overflows will take the small turn over rate from your canister. Some canisters do not have enough head pressure to lift the water from the sump to the tank. Most canisters are a loop from the tank so the head pressure from the tank helps to reduce the head pressure necessary to lift the water back to the tank. Hope that makes sense to you. In other words test your set up but be prepaired to buy a pump in case the canister does not work.

Gave up..purchased new stand that I will be able to put the 29 gal or something larger under.

Had to enlist lots of help...ticked off everything in my tank..."lost" my firefish(had to have been in a rock or something..they are fine but was worried as i couldnt find them)

But yaaa I got room now!
