Just had 2 more questions on what you guys do and think is best:

1) Gyres, should I lower their power at night? Or even completely turn them off, so the only current is from the pump pushing in water?
I have read that in the ocean the current pretty much stays the same day & night. But maybe it gives the Coral and fish a break?

2) Chocolate Chip Starfish. Finally have some soft coral in the tank and I have caught it going after some of them. Would it be inhumane to put the starfish in the sump, the section is about 40 -50 Gallons but only has some live rock, Seachem Matrix and some Cheato, no sand. Would that be mean? Never knew they could be so active and move so quickly haha

Thanks in advance!

If your current daytime flow is extremely high, you can lower it at night just to give the fish a break. I wouldn't completely shut if off though. I leave mine the same all the time but my flow isn't blowing the fish against the glass :) As far as the star, I personally wouldn't put him anywhere that doesn't have access to sand.

No star so no can say
I turn my power heads to low at night, after lights out and skimmer is shut off. My main pump is always on and it provides about 1/2 of my tanks circulation.

I've heard about turning powerbeads lower at night. Maybe I would do it, but right now I'm just running a very simple gyre type flow with 20 min "high" 20 min "low". Like @lapin I keep my return pump on at all time to make sure I'm getting good circulation, filtration, etc.

yes, gives everyone time to rest.

not sure but that's one cute starfish... I'm in same predicament with a flame angel, who after a year as model citizen it's decided to go after corals so I plan to remove him from tank soon and try to trade him for corals that he's eaten.

In regards to the starfish, have you considered taking it back to a LFS or trading/giving it to a local reefer? Those are not reef compatible and will definitely eat coral.
