My tank is fallow due to velvet outbreak. Only soft corals in tank now. Should I feed tank to keep my beneficial bacteria going? Also, when setting up a quarantine tank, can I use sand and a hob filter and run it semi permanently. Thanks for any help.

Yes to both. I would ghost feed the tank for bacteria and CUC if any. QT you can add sand and HOB filter with heater and let it run. For my QT tank that’s how I have it setup!!

Thank you. Sorry, but what is CUC.

Oh...duh. Thanks!

check out the sticky threads in the fish disease and prevention section. Some will advise against a lot of sand or live rock in a qt if you're planning to run copper. If just for observation is a different story.

One thing to keep in mind, temperature does affect how quickly the parasite is going through its life cycle. I would keep the DT temperature at 81F during the fallow period to make sure it is moving quickly across all stages of the life cycle.

Thanks. I have looked thru there. Its very confusing and alot of different opinions. Now that you mentioned this... New question. Some say that if your running a fish only tank, you can go ahead and medicate right in your dt. Wouldn't that kill your benifical bacteria? What am I missing?

I would advise against rising the temperature in the tank and medicating the DT. Must easier to control the water in a QT tank and equipment. You don’t have to worry about rock absorbing most meds as well as leeching down the road. Sand in fine in a QT tank as well I will post some good reads for you and help it helps.

Great. Thank you
