Covering inlet for external pump

Hello,

I have an external iwaki return pump about 1100 gph running from my 100g stock tank.

Inlet is connected to 1 inch slip pvc Tee.

already lost a fish into the pump suction,
What can i use to cover inlet?

Quarter inch BRS net ? Strainer? Or egg crate?

Strainers

These are used to "strain" the water entering the Durso Standpipe to keep large objects out (like snails) which might accidentally enter the standpipe and reduce or stop the water from flowing down to the sump.

I just make my own with a bit of gutter guard ziptied to the appropriate piece of plumbing.
