I found the crab hiding space. lift up the rock and tried to grab him out with some forceps but it dug itself deep in the rock and i couldn't pull it out. anyone know a good way to get him out? It's a good size crab about the the size of a golf ball all bunched up. I was thinking about putting the rock in freshwater but the rock is covered with teaxs trash polyps and i don't want to cause a cycle from the die off. I hate killing things but i'm tempted to just pull the rock out and stab it to death. especially if the reason why i've lost some prized lps in the past.

Squirt it with hydrogen peroxide a few times and then let it sit out of the tank. It will be sad but if you rinse the rock before you out it back in you will have no I'll effects. I use h202 all the time for algae and it causes bristle worms to come out of the rock in droves

nope it's brown, kinda hairy with black tips on it's claws. i'm gonna try the peroxide thing (thanks epicwin) if that doesn't work i may have to fall back to the stabbing method

Sounds like a gorrilia crab to me. A bad mamba jamba (I hear they like the most expensive corals most)

Use a trap to catch him and move him to your sump or get some melted butter and have lunch. You can make one out of a plastic soda bottle. Some are harder to catch than others but I once removed a hermit crab by waiting until the lights went out, putting a piece of shrimp in a clear area of sand close to the front of the tank and coming back 10 minutes later with a red flashlight to find him eating the shrimp and pulled him out of there.

the crab hunt didn't end well for the crab. I tried the food in a jar thing but it didn't fall for it. I had a bottle of peroxide ready to pour in his hiding place, but when i lifted the rock it ran instead of digging in the rock again. i chased and caught it put it in a jar and had to run to work. I forgot about it until i got off, it was dead by time I remembered. too bad crabby but if it was responsible for the deaths of some irreplaceable corals, then i'm not gonna lose any sleep over it.
