Found this cool little guy hitch kicking on the 20lbs of KP live rock I just received today. Wondering if anyone has a good idea of the species and if its basically reef safe? He's hanging out in a QT tank right now.

Thanks in advance!

Crabs are gonna be pretty hard to ID. For know i'd just toss him in my sump

Awesome looking crab! No idea what kind. I did get a couple of problem crabs from TBS live rock but I also got a slew of interesting crabs - filter feeders, an SPS symbiote, several that have stayed smaller than a dime. Sump him if you're worried about him but personally I'd try him in the display.

Looks like a lumpy pebble crab. Or red eyed crab. I would sump it. They can be opportunistic feeders.
It does look like one of those. He's a cool little guy and indeed in the sump for now; once I get a positive ID if he's harmless I'd like to put him in the DT but if not maybe I'll donate him to my LFS.

Any other ID's gladly welcome!

Not harmless when they get big, ideal sump crab with the odd meaty feed

Wow, great job identifying it! I figured it was some sort of Xanthidae species but could not figure out which one but I think you nailed it. So do you think it would be ok in the display side of my IM 20 gallon or best left in a sump? Seems like a guy for the sump?

Looks like an Xanthidae called Acteodes Tomentosus
Wow, great job with the identification! I figured it was some species of Xanthidae but I think you nailed the genus and species. So it sounds like best left to the sump and not in the display side of my 20 gallon?

Hmm, thinking this may indeed be P. rufopunctata (or some species of Paractaea) now as it looks like A. Tomentosus only occurs in the Pacific and Indian oceans whereas P. rufopunctata is found in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, etc. which is where the live rock originated from that he hitch a ride on.
