I was wondering if any one knew if a hermit crab i got was reef safe...actually i also wondered if it was even meant to stay in water all the time!!!?? I work at petco and someone brought it in to me... it came from panama city and they said it was fully submerged in the water...i'm just hoping its not one that has to come out of the water...its in a fairly big shell, at least 2 to 3 inches and has lengthwise white stripes on its legs and eye stalks are kind of yellowish...i dont want it to kill my corals... or drown!!! Take a look at the pic....Anybody know anything about him???

Its called a thin stripe hermit, it is an aquatic hermit, i have one a little bigger than 3" and, i keep mine in the sump because he snipped at some of my fish. So i would say they are reef safe when they are small but as adults no.

he will be fine underwater all the time. the only thing about them is that they wil knock things over and can sometimes be destructive due to their size. i have seen them pull sand dollars out of the sand and break them open for the meat. there might be some corals that they could treat simularly. they do get really big too. i would personally only put them in a predator tank that you couldnt keep the little hermits due to wrasses and the like and not with any real corals.

thanks.. i was pretty sure it was aquatic cause i left work last night and forgot them and they were in a specimen cup in about an inch of water all night!!! i had one a while back in my tank and thought it looked the same as this one but i wasnt sure...most of my fish are pretty big so hopefully they'll be ok..i was more worried about the corals...but i guess if worse comes to worse i can always put him in my refugium too...

thanks atlantisaquariums...i guess i'll have to keep my eye on them and toss em down below if they cause any trouble....
