Cracked corner of a 150 gal

So its 150 gal almost half inch thick glass. Is this tank trash? Or can I save it? Any ideas? Spent 1500 on this and cracked by accident when someone was helping me bring it inside.

That's "chipped" glass.... not a deep crack

Chipped glass usually doesn't spread nor creates issues

Think of it like a deep skin scrape vs a deepcut

Just eyeballing it, that's a nice size chip, depending exactly how deep and if it fails its a crop shoot. Ive ran some tanks throughout the years (all glass) with nice big chips missing and they never failed. Only tank I had fail was the only plexiglass tank I ever owned. But that doesn't look good.

I was thinking of bracing it with silicone with this other glass piece

Set it up in your garage and fill it with water

Around the damage, tape notebook paper so over a week to reveal any water staining on the paper

Man o man. I'm seeing some of these comments and it takes me back to my tank crash. For what its worth, to me it seems like it can hold. However, from someone who did suffer a crash, I would never wish that upon anyone else. I simply could not risk my tank (or my marriage) with something like this. From a long term perspective, $1500 isn't very much money. Sorry, unpopular post. I know.

I've repaired a similar chip once. I did this:
- cut a piece of rectangle black acrylic 1-2" bigger than the chip.
- cut out the section of the black tape on the back of the tank where the chip is.
- apply silicone to the black acrylic, completely covering one side. Line it up and stick it to the chipped portion. wait for it to cure
- after the acrylic piece cures, fill in the remaining cracks with silicon between the chipped part of the glass and acrylic.

Tank was used for several years after repair with no issues until I took it down.


It didn't leak after I chipped it but doing this repair made me feel safe to use the tank again

With where the tank will be placed how much damage to your home would 150 gallons of water do? It could probably be repaired but not worth the risk IMO.
