The main things that can wipe out a tank fast are temperature and Chemical pollution. Overfeeding is possible but unlikely. It was something catastrophic for sure so you have to find out, their is no such thing as bad luck in this complicated hobby its more a learning curve that we all have to go through. How many fish perished and what species?
2 clowns, 3 green chromises, 3 PJ Cardinals and a cleaner shrimp. Couple of hermits. One survived.

Those fish are very hardy and id hate for you to not pin point what happened. Check if your mom used any cleaner around the tank. perhaps air fresher, glass cleaner, soap, or candle? Best of luck

That seems to be the case IMO. I am still very new to reefs, but I've read horror stories about family members spraying rooms with chemicals and it completely crashing a tank almost instantly. Seems too coincidental that it was when somebody else was house sitting for just a couple days that almost everything died. Of course she wouldn't have known any better, as I wouldn't have without researching for hours and hours before starting up my first tank.

So good news for all of those who have been wondering. One of my fish survived! My pink spotted goby some how survived all of this. At this moment in time the tank is getting a complete over haul. I'm thinking that since my parents are letting me upgrade I want to keep this tank up and use it for frags and corals to grow in untill I get the new tank. I might add one of two fish but I'm kinda nervous about it. Ugh
