Let’s see those mangroves!! There’s something about mangroves that’s so intriguing. I love mine and take care of them as much as I do my coral. Mine during tank transfer.

How do Mangroves do in a fuge with Chaeto? How much sand is needed for them?

I have mine in coral rubble. I planted the root system down about 2”-3” into the substrate. Mine seem to do great under LED’s between 10-14k. As for nutrient export I think that a few or more would benefit to a degree but wouldn’t rely solely on them to be your main export method but would be a really cool addition to a supplemental export.

I like the skinny tall foot print! Can they be kept in a sump with no substrate or maybe just with some marine pure spheres?

Absolutely love Mangroves for a lot of reasons. Unfortunately it's illegal to ship them to Arizona, smh. ;Shifty

Those look nice and healthy.

Do you spray off the leaves routinely?

I love mangroves. Having a problem with mine though. Maybe someone can provide some insight! :)

I had one growing ok in my nano. Then I moved it to my big tank.
In the nano, the couple thick roots were touching the sand. So in the sand there were the fine roots that grew.
In the big tank, I had to suspend it, until the roots could grow longer... hopefully.
So the tiny thin roots disappeared (expected). And I lost a few leaves. Shock?
Meanwhile, it's been several months since and I have had ZERO growth. No more leaves, no more roots. Yet it still looks healthy.
What's going on? Will it ever start growing again?

Take a vacation to South Florida in the late Summer, tons of seedlings/pods to be found along the beaches (just don't take them from protected areas) ;)

I imagine moving it to a new system probably shocked it a bit. As long as it doesn't lose anymore leaves it should start growing eventually. Did the lighting for it change significantly?

No, same basic lighting, it just switched from a Mitras to Radions.
It's probably been 5 months since it was moved and lost a few leaves.

Probably just a little stunted then, they're finicky, this current cold snap in South Florida will have them stunted for months.

I would imagine that having no substrate would work but would be unnatural for the mangrove. Spheres may work but found what works best is sand or rubble. I bet something like Fiji Mud would be great! But what ever substrate you use I think available nutrients and light is key.

A little trick to jump start root growth I found was to pot them in Miracle Grow. Use an old pot that does not have drain holes. Add your water change water to the dirt. Keep the pot topped off with fresh water to maintain original specific gravity. They don’t seem to like big swings of any sort....salinity, light temperature etc. Be sure to wash them off really good before you add the to your reef!

The fine roots were absorbing nutrients in the sand. Like with anything, you remove it's food source and it will go into shock. Hopefully yours will pull through.

You say they are sensitive to big swings ins salinity and temp. I'm wondering what you mean by big. Since mangroves live in swamps, estuaries, deltas, or whatever, don't temps and salinity change daily based on tide, rain, and other conditions? I'm just wondering what you mean by big. I want to move my mangrove pods to a breeder style AIO system that I will build, and I am afraid that since it will be a rimless tank without a lid, that swings in salinity will hurt my plants. Please let me know any info is always appreciated!

This thread has made me decide to add my fuge mangrove to the display and see what happens. I’ve got a nice place for it.
