So, for quite some time I've had SPS slowly bleach or green on my with little to know explanation. I finally broke down and bought a Triton test and here's what I found:

Now, this was about a month ago and some pieces have recovered. However, some are still not looking great, and I still can't keep snails! They never move after acclimation, except for one random trochus who seems to be immune.

I have done lots of water changes, ran carbon, and run poly filters.

I have also changed magnets, heaters, and pumps.

Any additional thoughts on what I can do to get things back in order? My level seems at least 3x higher than any others I can find in searching.

Too add to the above, my silicon levels are even higher, though I've focused on chromium since my problems seems symptomatic of metals and I have no idea hot to even begin to tackle silicon.

Bump. Anyone out there that has had a similar experience and/or recommendations?

what salt or additive you using ?

have you been using Aquaforest ?

I would run triton detox and change rodi filters, and double up on water changes.

I started the tanks with Reef Crystals (about 9 months ago) but have been us HW Marine for quite some time now.

I did have one batch of HW that left a lot of precipitation at the beginning. At the time, I wasn't used to the salt and didn't think much of it, but now I know that it mixes clear very quickly.

I wonder if that could have been a bad batch?

Thanks. Been doing tons of water changes and had changed my filters, even though it was showing 0 tds.

As other have mentioned, though, it doesn't look like Triton Detox is going fine helpful for me here.

Thanks for confirming this.

My problem is I haven't been able to truly identify the source for the chromium and silicon, though i have swapped all the potential culprits.

Guess I will just need to send out another Triton test to see if I'm making progress and go from there.

Idk, how can i argue with triton over their own product? But i know I've used it multiple times and it has removed zinc and iron as well per triton testing. So maybe that is what they designed it to be for, but that doesn't mean it's all it does. Our maybe it could have been the activated carbon that removed the other elements.

Of course kent tech m was designed to raise magnesium, not remove bryopsis. And Bayer was formulated for insect control not coral pests. Etc etc. ;)

I cannot see any reason to think that silicate will harm corals, unless they are getting overrun with diatoms.

I'm not sure if the chromium is an issue or not. Trace metals are very hard to understand from a tox perspective because there are many forms and they are often complexed to organics which alter the toxicity.

I agree that looking for the source is a good plan, but I also recognize that you've already tried that.

Thanks very much for chiming in Randy!

Very glad to hear that the silicone isn't a point of concern given the very high levels.

While I can't say for sure that chromium has been the source of my struggles, something has certainly proved toxic to my sps.

The good news, though, is that frequent water changes and/or swapping possible sources of contamination in my equipment seems to have me on the right track. For the most part, my montis and acros are recovering. I plan to give a small batch of snails a shot again in the new future as well.

Fingers crossed! I'd be so happy to be able to start grabbing some nicer pieces of sps without so much fear.

You're welcome.

It may be present in trace element additives, so go easy on those as well. :)

Yes, I have a feeling that my lack of coral growth coupled with continual dosing of zeo products didn't help my cause.

Nothing against zeovit in general, but since ditching it and going back to a simpler system things are coming around for the better.

Did you ever find a solution to high chromium? I just got my icp test back and mine was through the roof. Found a fair bit of rust on my titanium heater

were any other metals elevated?
