I notice a very weird behavior in my powder blue tang...every night as the lights dim the crazy fish darts from end to end of the tank flaring its fins and darting back and forth some more. There is not another fish in the tank that is still “awake”. What gives?

I had the same thing occur with my previous group of fish (before they all got velvet and died - RIP fishies). I had a clown tang do the same thing - darting back and forth and back and forth some more.

It’s kinda funny. They never really showed this behavior during the day or as the lights came up.

Does anyone else have a fish perform like this?

My tangs do the same thing. IMHO, certain lighting situations can make them see there own reflection much clearer -- what they are actually doing is darting around defending the tank from the invading Tang that looks exactly like them!

I had a porcy puffer that would freak out when the lights went out. Darting around, biting at the front panel of the glass.

I figured it was due to the bright light and immediate darkness it sort of blinded it like how that does to us humans, going from bright to dark suddenly.

I don't think it's either of those things. Many of my fish exhibit curious behavior as the lights dim down to nothing. The crepuscular period is when mating occurs for some, predators are at their most active and competition for prime sleeping spots escalates. It's actually quite interesting to watch.
