I was just thinking of the possibility of coding a rasberry pi to help monitor tank parameters, timelines, etc. I am currently a sophomore computer science major at University and I'm in no rush to do this because my coding workload is large already. I am also open to any other coding gurus or software developers who would be willing to share information or help with the project.

Lots of controller use a arduino, i assume because it has almost an instant boot up as for a raspberry pi takes a few

I tried the arduino. The hardware is cheap enough and is fairly reliable. Pretty user friendly. But I'm a dummy when it comes to programming. Flea bay has nice relay sets that could be used like a eb8 is used and are made to work with arduino, pi ect. I ended up getting a good deal on an apex before I could get the coding figured out.

You should absolutely write your own controller :-)
Its fun, like reef keeping, you get to know lot of things, but about electronics and programming
I have built a raspberry pi based controller, and using it for a year now, Love it
