sorry to say i don't think my crinoid likes Oyster Feast... started dropping arms immediately

even my small crinoid who has had nothing but growth is falling apart... i hope they don't completely die.

This is a problem as feather stars rarely regrow dropped arms. Since you are feeding powdered/dead foods, what are your ammonia and nitrate levels?

How much did you add to the tank? If you target feed, did you dilute it before feeding as stated on the label? I am very curious. How long have you had the animal?

my system is much like an SPS tank, just without the SPS and coralline, My Ammonia are 0 Nitrite is 0 and Nitrate is at 5.

I did 5 ml with 2 ml of tank water and stirred it up for about 30 seconds i broadcast feed

How many gallons is your tank? 5mls is a very small amount of food and since it didn't result in an ammonia spike, it's got me thinking why this happened. Did they start dropping arms immediately or a day later?

i fed them the Oyster Feast and then they immediately tried to get away from it, after that failed they started dropping all their large arms and are only left with the small ones which i don't think they can capture food with. my tank is a 30 gallon

How long has your nitrates been at 5? Also do you have any salinity or temp swings, How do you manage evaporation and can you define "immediately?"

Edit: they can also drop arms in self defense against attacks. What else is in your tank?

I try to keep my Nitrates at 5 so i can get some algae growth for my snails and urchin. It's been like that for about a year, I manually top off and i'm always checking the back to see if the water level went lower than i have it. I don't have a heater or chiller as my tank never seems to go below of lower than 76 degrees f, I have a Blue Tuxedo urchin, 12 or so snails, 6 hermit crabs, 1 very shy and small emerald crab, 1 anemone crab, 2 yellow sea cucumbers, and a dying double star

@Kamden Uelton, crinoid are incredibly sensitive to nitrates and yours are likely in a weakened state because of the nitrates. Unless the food was rotten, it wouldn’t cause an adverse reaction like you are describing. What likely happened is that they are weakened from the nitrates, and in an attempt to move away from whatever was irritating them, the legs just fell off.

Also, what temperature was the food when you added it to the tank?

i didn't know 5 nitrates would hurt them... now i feel like a complete idiot. the temperature of the food 37 degrees f thanks for telling me about the nitrates, i'll do a 50% water change and see what happens

+1. To add to this, yellow cucumbers are also filter feeders that compete with the star for similar food. If your not feeding enough food for all three of them, the crinoid would also be hungry to top that.

How did the cucumbers react to the oyster feast? By small arms, do you mean the rock grippers? That's their feet

by arms i mean the things they filter with, i had this reaction when i first tried frozen "plankton" so i decided to dose in small amounts and honestly i don't think my Cucumbers liked it either they both shrunk up, i'll get a picture because i'm not good at explaining.

They lost arms before and regrew? Nice, that's a rare occurrence in captivity
