I need your help R2R!
Thoughts on my flow…

red sea 650p -peninsula 63” long
LPS dominate but a mixed reef.

right now I have 2x max spect 350 mounted vertical on each side of the overflow.
I am not sure I have Sufficient flow.

I know flow on peninsula tanks are quite challenging.
I really don’t want a PH on the short end of the tank if I can help it. As this is not a sps system I think I can get away with it.

so my questions are:
1. Do in need more flow? My gut says yes…
2. If so. I am between mp40, another set of gyres and a set of Wav.

if I had the $$ I prob. Would get a set of mo60s and call it a day.
But if I use both the gyres and mp40 I am thinking that might work out pretty good?

A bit more wouldn't hurt, but assuming no big dead spots I think it's sufficient for LPS. SPS would definitely be happier with more though.

I will add a few SPS up high in the tank.

if some how I could add a horizontal gyre to the overflow I think that would be perfect.

I’m just a beginner with LPS but to me it looks really good. I don’t like too much flow and I would even turn it down a notch. My corals do best that way.

I think you can definitely wait before spending money on more flow. Or maybe if you absolutely must, just buy a cheap power head on Amazon and return it if you don’t need it or want to replace it with a nicer one.

If it were me , definitely more flow. It’s not that it’s too low for the torches they look happy but the sand bed would probly be cleaner with more flow and the torches can take it

I run a pair of ReefWave45s on either end and a pair of Maxspect XF330s to the right and left of the return outlets on my Red Sea 750XXL (all horizontal). The XF330s run @10% and the ReefWave45s @20-30%, so I think you're probably fine with the pair of 350s.

I might try placing them horizontally instead (3-4" from the surface) and moving them out to the sides along the back panel -or- on the left/right side panels to see what that does with your flow patterns.

yeah I have been having the ugglies in the sand bed for over a year now. i do think better flow would help along with getting no4& po3 up...having troubles getting it up! :O

its a peninsula so I cant have them horizontal. I have thought about getting another 350 or the RS reef wave and adding it to the open end but I am trying to keep that clean if I can.

if there was a way I could add a PH to the overflow box that would be the cats meow! I have thought about siliconing one to the wire box...haha prop not a good idea

I probly have too much flow compared to a lot of setups, I do wish it was less linear but I run a gyre and return pump in 40b. The one thing that has always been clean is my sand bed I do nothing for it just flow and cuc

nice tank! I have a soft spot for 40brs

Ah, Peninsula - my bad. I think the two 350s are probably fine. The Maxspect gyres can also be run off the Icecap battery backup (unlike the ReefWaves).
yes I need to get my back up sorted out either add a pair of mp40 and there back up or the icecap one or DIY but I have had this tank now for a year + and need to stop messing around and get my back up game on.

thanks for the reminder that the maxspects can run on the icecap! what version do you have? how long does it last? have you tested it?

I have the newer Icecap battery (with the y-split cable). I haven't tested it for extended periods, but when I cut the power they drop to 10% until it's restored. I'd guess I'll probably get 6-12 hours.

The power is really good in my area. I think the longest outage I've seen in the past dozen years has been an hour.

man such a hard call. I feel my tank would benefit with more flow as I add more coral and it grows. the trick is, as this will be mostly LPS meat and euphyllia i dont want to over do it.

my options are another set of the maxspect when they work good i like them when not not so much.

add a mp40 to each side and get the batter backup. they say it last 30hrs with the vortech pumps .

honestly I would rater spend the $$ on coral but I do have a 500 credit at BRS and I feel in the long run it is needed.

anyone else what to chime in?
I have 2 mp40s in my cart. about to pull the trigger.

best option I can think of expect 2mp60 and sale the gyres but I do like them...

humm now I am also think about a pair of icecap 4K Gyres to add to the back wall.
the trick is not to much flow but getting what I need.

the cheapest solution would add a gyre to the from short end. BOO or glue one to the overflow.
