Please open the picture/file and help me ID this beautiful creature that came on some live rock from FL. It was real small last year but has grown a lot in six months. I wish he would come out from behind the rock but he has moved behind another rock so I can't see him from the display side. This picture was taken from the back of the tank in the fish room looking toward the front glass. He has a tongue or something that comes out when I put food in the tank and closes up if he gets nervous.

It's probably a different species of scallop since the flesh isn't bright orange, and yes they can be because they eat particulate food in the water, as they are generally not photosynthetic. If you've been feeding fine foods, that may be doing it, and maybe other copepods and things supplement what it's been growing with.

The tentacles definitely look like a scallop, but you'd get a clear two part shell that closes when disturbed. As you've seen it move, maybe you'll catch it moving after lights out some day - they actually swim by flapping their shell, and it's pretty hilarious looking if you're lucky enough to see them at it.
