Adding new substrate to my tank for a jawfish. Clam is a 3 inch crocea. Small piece fell on its mantel. Rock was about 1/8 inch. Clam closed up and the rock went inside. Will it be ok?

Thoughts?

Clams can let out things via the Byssal opening. I would not try to dig it out. When a clam is thin, you can look in the afferent opening and see right through to the substrate through the byssal opening. Often looking though a fat clam it is more difficult, put the opening is there and it is large.

Orion as always you come through with great information. It is a fat clam. And I will just watch.

When I first got my squamosa I was always worried about getting sand in the opening of the filters at the mantle. Over time my pistol shrimp had dug sand on it quite a few times, and it clearly doesnt bother it. I will occasionally see it pump real hard and expel, probably has some way of dealing with this from the wild.
