Have a friend who was asking me this. His male crosshatch has a good sized dot on his top fin. Any help would be great.

Is it new or has it been there for a long time?

Looks like a piece of sand... is it on top or the actual color of the fish?

It’s right on top and they said it has been there for awhile. They also have a blue jaw in another tank with the same thing. No other spots on the fish but that white spot has been there for a few weeks.

Most likely it is a broken fin ray. It could be Lymphocystis, but that viral disease will go away on its own in 4 to 6 weeks, although new spots may develop.

Thank you @Jay Hemdal . It does look like a fin ray when I google. Anything he will need to
Do?

No, nothing to do but just watch it for spreading or growth in case the diagnose is wrong.
